Learn the Fundamentals of Ayurvedic Medicine
This 12-month program offers both in-depth theoretical knowledge and personal, practical guidance in practicing an Ayurvedic lifestyle. In addition to Ayurvedic medicine, we have included some wonderful transformative tools for you in this program, such as Introduction to Vedic Astrology, Yoga and meditation. The goal is for you to personally experience the effect on a physical, mental and spiritual level. After completing this year, you can continue your education to become a certified Ayurvedic Health Counselor or Practitioner.
Language: This course is taught entirely in English.
Duration: 12 months, 50 EC’s
Teaching days: Total 24 teaching days in year 1 +
> 15 hrs Ayurvedic Massage Workshop
> 12 hours Introduction to Vedic Astrology (divided over 6 lessons of 2 hours)
Teaching method: There are two options for following this course:
Blended Learning classroom education. Combination of self-study, 2 live teaching days (Friday online and Saturday classroom in The Hague) per module. Exception is massage workshop.
Blended Live-online. Same as above but then the 2 live teaching days via zoom instead of in person classroom. Exception same as above.
What does the training entail?
The modules
- You have knowledge of the broad nature of Ayurvedic philosophy and how it relates to the foundation of health and well-being.
- You demonstrate competence in Ayurvedic anatomy, physiology and pathology.
- You understand the basic principles of Vedic astrology for your own transformation and that of your clients.
- You have knowledge of the broad nature of what yoga is and its philosophy: Yamas & Niyama and can apply this understanding in daily life.
- You experience from Tantra Yoga how the Kundalini energy can be awakened for your own transformation and development.
- You demonstrate the ability to give Ayurvedic oil massage for the whole body.
- You understand the nature of Ayurvedic nutrition and herbal medicine and how these can be used to improve health.
- You understand the range of holistic therapies and rituals and how they can be used as part of treatment plans.
- You will learn protocols for sleep problems, digestive problems, stress and burnout, headaches, PMS and Menopause.
- You will understand the panchakarma theory and how it can be implemented.
- A comprehensive theoretical training in Ayurvedic medicine.
- You will receive knowledge and practice of hatha yoga, tantra yoga, vedic astrology and pranic healing
- Ayurvedic daily routine essentials box (tongue scraper, Abhyanga oil, Neti Pot, nose oil, rose water, eye cup).
- Textbook principles of Ayurvedic medicine by Dr. Marc Halpern.
- Personal guidance once a month by Riim Lagerwerf, session 45 minutes.
Blended learning: live classroom sessions in The Hague and online live zoom sessions with self-study. Can’t attend the live sessions? They will be recorded so you can watch them again.
Please note that you must attend a personal 3-day Intensive prior to the internship program and that the rest of the Intensive is online.

- Introduction to Vedic Astrology. Our goal is not to teach you all the details of Vedic astrology. That would be very complex. What we do want to do is show you how using basic knowledge can contribute to your own transformation and for your future clients.
- We integrate rituals from Tantra Yoga, Yoga asanas, philosophy, meditation and pranayama throughout the program to support you in your personal process.
- An extensive 6 month internship program.
Admission requires that the prospective student:
- Is prepared not only to study and learn, but also to develop personally and spiritually.
- Is at least eighteen years old. Exceptions are possible after consultation with the examination board.
- Is in possession of at least a high school diploma of HAVO, VWO diploma or an MBO 4 (or equivalent certification for international students). Exceptions are possible after consultation with the examination board.
- Has a good command of the English language, both spoken and written.
- Undergoes a personal intake interview;
- Enrolls via the online registration form, with which the student also confirms that he/she has received and read the study guide, the education, the examination regulations and the general terms and conditions;
- Meets the minimum requirements to participate in distance learning.
In the Netherlands we are a CRBKO registered institution. CRKBO is: the register for providers of short vocational education.
The Ayurvedic Health Counselor and Ayurvedic Practitioner training is accredited by KTNO as a professional vocational training and the Foundations of Ayurvedic Medicine is accredited as module as part of the training. Our goal is to accredit our education by CPION in 2025.
KTNO is an accreditation platform for healthcare professionals, professional associations, trainers and further and additional training institutes in complementary care. KTNO represents their interests, informs external parties and (guarantees) quality.
CPION – Center for Post-Initial Education Netherlands is the central organization for testing, certifying and registering post-initial training courses.

This tuition includes the textbook required for the training and excludes any recommended literature and excludes registration costs of €125,- and excludes travel costs to The Hague and accommodation costs.
The price mentioned is subject to change. The training is exempt from VAT. The costs for the training are tax deductible in The Netherlands, for more information we refer you to the website of the Tax Authorities.
The assessment program consists of:
- Homework assignments per module (questions and assignments). Students receive a grade for fully answering the assignments. Students must achieve a passing grade of minimum 6 for each assignment.
- Quizes: Multiple choice knowledge tests per module. You will not receive a grade for these tests
- Three (3) Interim exam tests
- Case study assignments from module 3 onwards.
- Students receive a certificate of successful completion when payment of financial obligations and completion of all homework and assignments and a final grade of at least 6 is achieved. Note that the Fundamentals of Ayurvedic Medicine program is a non practitioner certification. In order to receive the Ayurvedic Health Counselor certification students must complete the six month internship program.

You’ll receive an introduction to the Ayurvedic and Yogic lifestyle, meeting all the teachers while gaining a fresh perspective on yourself. Our first day together begins with a beautiful ritual, fostering a sense of community. We will explore the principles of self-care and embrace a sattvic lifestyle, setting the foundation for our learning experience
In Module 2, we journey back to the origins of ancient wisdom, immersing ourselves in the foundational Ayurvedic texts. We will delve into the profound philosophies of Raja Yoga and Tantra Yoga, uncovering their timeless teachings. Additionally, this module offers insights into the history and introduction of Vedic Astrology,enriching your understanding of these interconnected disciplines. We will continue to build upon previous module when it comes to practicing daily routine.
In Module 3, we delve into the intricate world of Ayurvedic anatomy and physiology, uncovering the foundational principles that govern our bodies and minds. This module offers a comprehensive exploration of the 20 qualities of all matter, the five elements and their connection to the senses, and the profound Tridosha theory along with its subdoshas. You’ll gain insights more insights into Prakruti, your unique constitution, and Vikruti, your current state of health, as we discuss the signs of imbalance and the basic principles of treatment. We will also explore the seven dhatus, or tissues, and the concept of Ojas, the essence of vitality and resistance. By linking these teachings to our own constitutions and health states, we will use yoga, pranic healing, lifestyle adjustments, and rituals to harmonize the elements within us, fostering balance and well-being.
Welcome to Module 4: The Basics of Digestion According to Ayurveda, where we delve into the profound wisdom of Ayurvedic anatomy and physiology. This module takes you to the core of digestion, exploring not just the food we consume, but everything we absorb through our senses. Discover the intricate dance of Paka (digestion) and Agni (digestive fire), and learn about the 13 agnis that govern our body’s transformative processes. We will explore how tissues are formed, the essence of Ojas, and the four forms of Ama (toxins) that can disrupt our health. Gain insights into the waste products and the vital srotas (channels) that facilitate balance and flow within the body. Through this journey, we will connect these concepts to our own lives, understanding the state of our Agni, Ama, and srotas, and learn how to harmonize them. This month, we will explore the three essential approaches to understanding disease and imbalance, equipping you with the tools to conduct a comprehensive Ayurvedic assessment. Learn the art of functional, Ayurvedic diet and lifestyle anamnesis, and learn about the 8 and 10-fold examination techniques. Delve into the examination of dhatus (tissues) and srotas (channels), and learn about urine, pulse, and tongue diagnosis. You will gain the skills to select the most suitable nutritional programs and diets for treatment, turning your kitchen into a space of healing and ritual. Together, we will explore Ayurvedic superfoods and transform cooking into a mindful sadhana. Additionally, this module will guide you in supporting others on their nutritional journeys, while also encouraging a deep reflection on your own relationship with food. Embrace this opportunity to nourish both body and spirit, fostering a holistic approach to health and vitality.
Step into the world of Ayurvedic Herbalism with Module 10, where you will build upon your knowledge of Ayurvedic nutrition to explore the foundational principles of herbal medicine. This month, you will become intimately acquainted with 20 essential herbs, learning to recognize their properties and experimenting with them firsthand. Together, we will taste and experience each herb, deepening your understanding of their actions and common preparations. Delve into the theory of formulating herbal complexes and discover the relationship between herbs, dhatus, and srotas. While you will not yet treat diseases or conditions with herbal medicines as an Ayurvedic Health Counselor, you will gain valuable insights into classical formulas that you may use. This module empowers you to harness the healing potential of herbs, enriching your practice and enhancing your journey toward holistic health.
Welcome to Module 11, where we explore the art of balancing the doshas through holistic therapies and rituals that engage the five senses. This month, you will delve into the transformative practices of aromatherapy, color therapy, gemstone therapy, sound therapy, and massage therapy. Discover how these therapies, combined with yoga and rituals, can restore harmony and well-being. We will also provide you with protocols to address common challenges such as digestive issues, sleep disturbances, stress and burnout, PMS, and menopause. This module offers a comprehensive approach to healing, empowering you to integrate these therapies into your practice later and your personal life, fostering a deeper connection to holistic health and balance.
Embark on a journey of cleansing and rejuvenation with Module 12, where you will be introduced to the foundational theory of Panchakarma, the five-fold Ayurvedic detoxification and revitalization program for the body, mind, and consciousness. This module will guide you in understanding when a client or patient requires tonification, palliation, or reduction therapy, equipping you with the knowledge to make informed decisions in your practice. As an Ayurvedic Health Counselor, you will learn the art of Abhyanga, a key component of Panchakarma, while the design of comprehensive Panchakarma programs will be explored in the Practitioner program. This module lays the groundwork for deeper exploration, offering insights into the transformative potential of Panchakarma in achieving holistic health and balance.
